Product Description

The LM235 is a precision temperature sensor from Texas Instruments that outputs a voltage linearly proportional to the absolute temperature in Kelvin. It's very similar to the LM135/LM335 series, and it's commonly used for temperature measurements in both analog and digital systems.

Key Features of LM235:

  • Voltage output: 10 mV/K (Kelvin)
  • Temperature range: –40°C to +125°C (typical), though it can operate beyond this with derating.
  • Output at 25°C:
  • 10 mV/K×(273+25)=2.98 V10 \text{ mV/K} \times (273 + 25) = 2.98 \text{ V}10 mV/K×(273+25)=2.98 V
  • Accuracy: ±1°C typical (after calibration), ±2°C max (without calibration)
  • Calibration: Can be calibrated at a single point due to linear output
  • Low impedance output: Can drive loads directly
  • Low cost, easy to use

Basic Circuit Example:

To use the LM235, you typically connect:

  • V+ (anode) to a positive voltage supply (5V to 30V)
  • V– (cathode) to ground
  • Output taken from the cathode with a resistor to ground, or measured directly

Temperature Calculation:

To convert the output voltage to Celsius:

  1. Measure voltage VoutV_{out}Vout
  2. Convert voltage to temperature in Kelvin:
  3. TK=Vout/0.01T_K = V_{out} / 0.01TK=Vout/0.01
  4. Convert Kelvin to Celsius:
  5. TC=TK−273.15T_C = T_K - 273.15TC=TK−273.15

Applications:

  • Environmental monitoring
  • Industrial temperature sensing
  • Consumer electronics
  • HVAC systems
  • Microcontroller-based data logging
